Full sun to part shade, wet to medium moisture level, tolerant of a wide range of soils including clay, strongly acid to neutral pH. 3-25 feet height (up to 30 ft.), blooms in late winter to spring (but blooming is very rare), dark green flowers, spreads rapidly by rhizomes.

This native bamboo provides an evergreen screen and is a good native alternative to the aggressive exotic bamboo. Forms open-to-dense colonies. ‘Tecta’ is a shorter form, seldom seen growing much over 20 feet. Host plant for several uncommon butterflies (pearly eyes and skippers).
