Full sun to light shade, wet to moderately wet moisture, loamy or sandy soil, pH adaptable. 1 to 3 feet height, white flowers, blooms for 1-2 months in late spring to mid-summer.

This attractive milkweed is easy to identify with its dark, purplish green stem and large pink spot at the tip of the flower buds which open to white. It is a wetland plant, occurring in floodplains, water way margins, marshes, swamps, ditches and other wetlands. Can only grow in full sun if it is continuously wet, otherwise prefers partial to full shade. Flowers are mildly fragrant. Under favorable growing conditions, plant forms a woody crown with more and more flowering stems each year. Important plant for bees and butterflies, especially the Monarch butterfly.
