Full sun, wet to moderately wet moisture level, adaptable to a wide range of soils except rocky, moderately acid to slightly alkaline pH. 2-4 feet height, spreads slowly by re-seeding and by rhizomes.

Cool season. This is a wetland plant with a strong, extensive rhizomatous root system which provides excellent erosion control. Thrives in marshy conditions, and its prickly green seedheads form throughout the summer and fall.
