Small, well-behaved vine that works well on trellises.  One of the finest native clematis.  Uses tendrils to climb and would be well suited for a chain-link fence.  In the wild, occurs in rocky, open woods, bluff ledges, and rocky ravines.  Prefers locations with a shady northern or eastern exposure.  Attracts bees and butterflies.
