Common Name: Stiff Dogwood, Swamp Dogwood, English Dogwood, Stiff Cornel

Part to full shade; wet to medium moisture level; prefers loamy soil with organic matter but tolerates sandy, low fertility soils; mildly acidic to neutral pH.

8-15 feet height by 10-15 feet spread; blooms in spring; creamy white flowers; small, open clusters of bright blue fruits in fall.

Growth Rate:  Slow to moderate

Maintenance:  Low maintenance.  Pruning to within a few inches of the ground every few years promotes a fuller look.

Propagation:  Germination code A.  Easily grown from seed, which should be planted immediately after harvest; easy from softwood cuttings.

Native Region:  Statewide but concentrated in the Coastal Plain Province

Deciduous small tree to large shrub with profuse white flowers and multiple trunks four inches in diameter.  Attractive landscape species that is frequently used for naturalizing and also makes a good screen or border.  Generally grows in swampy, low wetland habitats and along streams, riverbanks, marshes and creeks.  Attracts birds, butterflies and bees.
