Common Name: River Bulrush

Full sun; wet to moderately wet moisture level; soils include clay, loam, peat and sand; high tolerance for alkaline soils.  2 ½ – 6 ½ feet height, blooms in summer, brown flowers, spreads aggressively by rhizomes to form colonies.

Native Region:  Only occurs in Henry and Humphreys counties

Designated a “Special Concern” species in Tennessee.  Grows on the shorelines of rivers and streams and also in marshes and other wet places.  Invaluable for preventing soil erosion from entering a body of water.  Forms very thick colonies rather quickly.  Provides excellent nesting habitat for waterfowl and cover for spawning fish.
