Full to part sun, wet to moderately wet moisture level, prefers peat or sandy soil types, circumneutral to acidic pH.  4-5 feet height, blooms summer into fall, greenish-brown flowers, spreads by short rhizomes and can form dense colonies.

Cool-season grower that is a wetland plant in Tennessee.  Erect grass-like plant with unusual flowers that is an attractive addition in moist gardens.  Naturally occurs in irregularly flooded tidal fresh marshes, inland marshes, wet meadows and swamps.  Grows best in areas with wet soil moisture and is seldom found in more than a few inches of water.  One of several important species of wetland plants that provide food and cover for waterfowl and other wildlife.
