Common Name: New England Aster
Full sun, wet to moderately dry moisture level, most soils including clay, neutral to slightly acid pH. 3-5 ft. height, blooms in fall, purple flowers.
Germination Code: C(60)
Native Region: Lightly statewide
One of the best known asters with many commercially propagated cultivars. Easy to grow from seed. Becomes almost shrub-like in size and tends to sprawl. Heavy pruning in mid-June leads to a more compact plant. Attracts butterflies and bees. Due to its late blooming period, it is a critical fall nectar source for Monarch butterflies as they prepare for their long migration to Mexico.
