Common Name: Toadshade, Little Sweet Betsy, Whippoorwill Flower

Shade, medium moisture level, humus-rich soil, slightly acid to neutral pH.  12-15 inches height, blooms in early spring, dark red or maroon flowers, spreads very gradually if left undisturbed.

Flowers are showy and lightly fragrant.  Foliage will usually die to the ground by mid-summer, especially if the soil is allowed to dry out.  New rhizomes require 7 years before they contain enough food to support a blooming stalk.
